Groundwater is used for domestic, industrial water supply and irrigation all over the world. In the last few decades, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand for fresh water due to rapid growth of population and accelerated pace of industrialization. Human health is threatened by most of the agricultural development activities particularly in relation to excessive application of fertilizers and unsanitary conditions. Rapid urbanization has affected the availability and quality of groundwater due to its overexploitation and improper waste disposal, especially in urban areas. Once the groundwater is contaminated, its quality cannot be restored by stopping the pollutants from the source. It therefore becomes imperative to regularly monitor the quality of groundwater and to device ways and means to protect it. Water Quality Index (WQI) is one of the most effective tools to communicate information on the quality of water to the concerned citizens and policy makers. It, thus, becomes an important parameter for the assessment and management of groundwater. This thesis deals with the present situation of groundwater quality in India, highlights the water quality standards to be met for domestic and irrigation purposes, explains the preparation of Drinking Water Quality Index (DWQI) map and Irrigation Water Quality Index (IWQI) Map using Geographical Information System (GIS) and also presents a review on the different procedures adopted for groundwater quality evaluation for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Martial arts were developed for use on the battlefield in ancient times, and are useful even today for self-defense Despite their combative nature, training in martial arts is safe compared with many other contact sports. The use of protective equipment such as mouth guards and headgear is mandatory during sparring, and practitioners must follow strict competition rules in many types of martial arts. Some types of martial arts such as Tai Chi and Qigong are noncombative in nature, with practitioners focusing on coordinated movements and relaxation during practice – all of which are beneficial to practitioners’ health These days, the popularity of martial arts is increasing, particularly among young people. There are about 200 distinct martial arts types or disciplines around the world, each with its own training characteristics and philosophy. Only the most common types of Oriental and Western martial arts and their associated health effects are scientifically analyzed in this thesis. These martial disciplines include the internal (e.g. Tai Chi and Qigong) and external (e.g. Choy Lee Fut and Shaolin Kung Fu) Chinese martial arts, Taekwondo, Thai Boxing, Western Boxing, Wrestling and Fencing.
